What is digital minimalism?

In an era where information is limitless and digital distractions are a click away, minimalism invites us to shape our digital environment with intention. This means making conscious choices about the technologies we allow into our lives and setting boundaries to maintain autonomy over our attention and time.

Digital minimalism is a philosophy rooted in redefining your relationship with technology, so that every scroll, click and download isn’t adding more unnecessary and meaningless digital noise to your life.

Not only can digital minimalism lead to greater productivity, it’s a path toward greater digital satisfaction.

The impact of digital minimalism

On mental health and wellbeing

Reducing clutter can significantly lower stress and anxiety, leading to a clearer mind and more restful sleep. The same is true for digital decluttering. It fosters a healthier balance between online and offline lives, which is crucial for emotional and psychological wellbeing.

Enhancing productivity and focus

With fewer digital distractions, you can achieve deeper focus and higher efficiency in your tasks. This streamlined approach allows for more in-depth learning and a greater capacity for critical thinking and creativity.

Cultivate a more meaningful online experience

Digital minimalism helps you engage in online activities that add value to your life. Whether it’s for learning, connecting with others or managing tasks, each interaction becomes more intentional and purposeful.

Practicing digital minimalism

Decluttering isn’t just about aesthetics, it's about function. An overloaded browser can slow down performance, reduce productivity and increase stress. By decluttering your digital space, you can reclaim your focus and redirect it towards more fulfilling activities.

Start by evaluating your current digital usage. Identify which apps, websites and technologies consume your time (and increase stress). Screen time trackers are a good place to look for quick insights into your habits, since it will be easy to see what apps you can start using less.

Practical tips to declutter your digital tools

Shift’s article shares 20 tips for keeping an organized and tidy browser. While we won’t repeat them, there are two we’ve been using at Digital Entrepreneur: limiting open tabs and organizing tabs logically.

  1. Limit open tabs While writing this article, we had 13 tabs open, but after checking, only four were relevant to our research on digital minimalism, and another five were open for music streaming, writing and graphic design. Closing the remaining tabs that we didn’t need made it much easier to keep track of our workflow.
  2. Arrange tabs logically With nine tabs left, we took Shift’s advice and rearranged them into an order that made it easier to identify and switch between them. The difference it made was subtle at first, but in the end, we were able to work faster because no time was wasted searching for the right tab.

Maintaining a minimalist digital life

Digital minimalism is a mix of moment-to-moment decisions, like the tab exercise we did above, and regular review and adjustments to the apps you use and the boundaries you set around your own digital consumption habits.

Shift's tips on managing browser clutter serves as a reminder that it’s easy to reduce your digital overload, even when you run a business that requires you to have a strong online presence.

By embracing the principles of digital minimalism, we can take meaningful strides towards not just a more organized digital workspace but a more intentional and fulfilling digital life.
